On Friday night, I attempted to go to Lolita to introduce a friend to the iconic margarita – a big moment. We were disappointed to find that it was way too crowded for a proper introduction to the tequila cocktail, so we switched gears and headed to BarLola, only a few blocks away.
I hadn’t been there before, but was impressed (and disturbed: how did I not know about place this sooner!?). The food and drinks are higher end, but it has a decidedly neighborhood feel. There are couples who you can tell have been going there for years and have a friendly rapport with the bartenders, plus big gangs of girls celebrating whatever it might be (a lot of champagne was popped).
We sipped selections from their lengthy martini menu – I had the La Flamenca. As you can guess, it was comprised of gin and St Germaine. And oh did it treat me right! I can see going back in the future for dinner – if the drinks are any indication of the quality, it’s sure to be a new Howlin’ Lamb haunt.
The short of it:
160 Commonwealth Avenue, Back Bay (5 minute walk from Back Bay T stop)
- Good for…
- A first or second date – it’s dark enough to be romantic, but not at all heavy handed
- Drinks with a couple of girlfriends – the drink menu is extensive and there is room to move around, so there’s no need to worry about not being able to find a spot to sit or stand
- Not the place for…
- Big groups – it’s on the smaller side, we had to wait for a few minutes for seats at the bar
- Looking super casual – I was glad to be wearing something other than a sweater, though it’s definitely not a spot for your highest heels
Your friends at Howlin’ Lamb
P.S. Full disclosure: the above picture is not from Bar Lola (it’s from Sonsie, another great spot). I failed and forgot to take any photos!
